My search results...

Below is a screen capture I took of the results page from Google. I had searched "web design new jersey". My business, Uson Consulting came up on the first page in the second position after the three paid, sponsored results which tend to hold less importance with people conducting searches. If any of those top three results stopped paying I wonder where they would end up?

Anyhow, I am patting myself a bit on the back because that "organic" result is due to my efforts on the website in terms of optimizing it and doing all the right things. It coincides with the fact that my site traffic (for unique visitors) has gone up tremendously since I started working on my own site. In fact, the number of unique site visitors I have in the first quarter of 2014 is greater than all the unique site visitor I had in 2013 (I started to optimize and work on my own site at the beginning of 2013).

Would you like to learn about how we can help your site traffic increase and potentially get you better search results? Contact us and let's meet, coffee is on me!

A good problem to have… turning away customers

One of my clients gave me a big compliment the other day. She frantically said, "Freddy, no more advertising, we are at capacity and cannot accept more customers. We do not advertise and only use the website to market our business. So we need to stop advertising." Keep in mind that the ONLY advertising and marketing this business does is maintain a well optimized, content-rich website with consistent updates added on a regular basis.

Obviously this is a good problem to have. What exactly I could stop is several things that we do to the site but I would not stop anything in my opinion. I know the business owner is concerned about turning away customers and she may be worried about the need to either expand her space, get more employees, figure out a way to stagger the customers, etc. Obviously there are many people interested in what this client has since she is literally turning them away. So my initial response was, "let them have access to your knowledge and expertise by selling information or a guide online." This can be in the form of a PDF so you do not have to worry about the cost of printing or shipping. With our eCommerce capabilities the site visitor can simply download the PDF once the transaction is complete. Once you sell something you have a "registered" new contact that you will plug into your email campaigns. You can start to roll out a sales marketing system with that customer who may purchase again in the future or contact you when you are ready to accept more customers.

With eCommece / Online Shopping rising traditional stores will need changes to survive

Below is a post from a blog I came across. Talks about not only the amount Online Shopping increased this past holiday season but also how it affects other fringe businesses who rely on foot traffic. The other interesting thing is that the increase in online shopping actually surpasses the expert's expectations.

Here is the original blog post or scroll down and read what I copied/pasted below.

The online-shopping revolution has been heralded and hyped since the mid-1990s, and has been advancing quickly for a decade. So how did we end up with a consumer industry that seems unprepared for it?

Consider the evidence that's piled up over the past few months, showing growth in e-commerce has indisputably begun to upend the familiar American shopping economy:

-Visits to retail stores during the holiday-shopping season collapsed, despite broad improvement in the economy and job market. As the Wall Street Journal neatly detailed Friday, measured in-store traffic in November and December was around half the level of the same period in 2010 – a time when the economic recovery was in a significantly more fragile state. But that’s not because folks didn’t spend – industry estimates place 2013 holiday-spending growth at close to 5%.

Best Buy Inc. (BBY) reported same-store sales slipped 0.9% amid some of the heaviest discounting on electronics in years. Sears Holdings Inc. (SHLD) and JC Penney Inc. (JCP), already tired market-share losers at the mall, saw their struggles worsen and remain in heavy store-closure mode. Even Macy’s Inc. (M), easily the best operator in mainline department stores, is trimming its physical presence, closing five locations and shedding 2,000 employees.

Even among the most ubiquitous chains where sales are holding up, they owe much success to their online presence. For Gap Stores Inc. (GPS), online sales in the third quarter grew by 20%, and amounted to 15% of company-wide revenue.

There are simply far too many stores in this country for the current level of in-person shopping that occurs. Even as customer traffic has slid dramatically, total retail square footage has continued to increase each year, albeit at a reduced pace since 2008.

In part, the retail-store boom tracked the credit and housing bubbles. New suburban and exurban development brought waves of consumers to new areas, and cheap capital allowed for the plopping down of malls and strip centers by developers looking to serve these folks. But unlike in the single-family home market, where foreclosures, bank loan losses and an influx of private-investor capital purged and refreshed the system, hardly any net closure of stores has occurred. And while people will always need a place to live, it’s clear many feel no need to walk the aisles of a store as often as they used to.

-Fewer afternoons at the mall has also meant fewer dinners at the nearby Red Lobster (owned by Darden Restaurants, Inc.) or Ruby Tuesday (RT). The casual-dining chains have witnessed lower customer traffic for nine of the past 13 years. And while the declines in visits were understandably most pronounced in the recession years of 2008 and 2009, they reaccelerated in 2012 and 2013 again, as this Knapp Track data cited by HedgEye Risk Management’s Howard Penney show.

Much else is happening here, from tired menus and restaurant concepts to the rise of “fast casual” chains such as Panera Bread Co. (PNRA) and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (CMG). But the point is the same as with chain retailers: There are too many locations and more people are choosing to take what they want “to go” or getting deliveries to their home.

-Meantime, in a surprising turn, the concentrated surge in online buying over the holiday season buckled the package-delivery infrastructure. United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS), which already announced weather and logistical challenges kept it from making many deliveries as promised by Christmas, on Friday said its fourth-quarter profits would fall short of Wall Street forecasts largely due to its miscalculations.

In promising more free and rapid delivery, Amazon.com (AMZN) and myriad other aggressive online retail venues have relied on UPS, FedEx Corp. (FDX) and the U.S. Postal Service to rise to the challenge. This year, the growing pains caused by trying to service the enormous demand for immediacy seem finally to be taking a toll.

UPS said despite having added 85,000 seasonal workers – 30,000 more than the prior year – the company performance was undercut “by the challenges of the compressed peak season coupled with an unprecedented level of online shopping that included a surge of last-minute orders.”

Clearly, a number of industries need to retool in order to adapt to this acceleration in the rise of on-demand, online consumer preferences. From a broad economic perspective, though, the effects are likely to restrain consumer-price inflation. Technology is deflationary, universal price-comparison ability is deflationary and excess store capacity should be deflationary, both for retail prices and perhaps store rents.

As Barry Ritholtz notes at Bloomberg View, the retail game in most mainstream categories has made price-matching virtually mandatory. Casual-dining “value pricing” has escalated to near-comical levels of calories per dollar on offer. Red Lobster is promoting two entrees, two salads and a dessert for $29.99, and Olive Garden, another Darden eatery, has four lunch entrees for sit-down diners priced at $10 – barely above the average cost of a takeout meal at Chipotle.

As such behavior becomes ingrained as business-as-usual for companies, it will be hard for sellers of consumer goods in a broad expanse of the American economy to lift prices with much success.

Increasing lead growth by 126%

The platform I place all my clients on (mawebcenters) posted recently that "Blogs help small businesses gain 126% more leads. Have you integrated your blog with your website yet?" I looked into this because I wanted to see where the numbers came from since I personally see a increase in site visits and forms filled (lead generation) when I blog frequently. I found that a study by HubSpot who claims that 2,300 of their customers saw monthly leads rise by 126% more than those who do not blog.

You could argue that a business who blogs is probably doing other things that improve site traffic and lead generation such as an effort with social media, optimizing the site on a regular basis, etc. One reason people read a blog is to get expert advice and learn something that you can benefit from. If the blog has consistent content it will generate repeat blog visitors who may jump to the business website or a landing page via links and gain interest in the business over time.

Gain new customers and a profit upfront.

Here is an easy way to gain new customers and collect profits upfront with a simple upgrade to your existing web site.

I have many clients who have a web site for a business that offers services. Some of my clients also have web sites for simply providing information. Both of these examples do not typically use E-commerce on their web sites compared to the other type of product-based clients who always sell online.

I feel that just about any business should implement E-commerce to take advantage of the traffic on the site. If you do not dangle anything on the hook no one will take a bite. So the comment I get most often is, "I do not have anything to sell online".

If you are in business you must receive income from something, right? The most obvious way to use E-commerce is to accept payments on your site. You can offer an alternative to your customers and have the ability to break up the payment into multiple installments or as a one-time payment. The great thing about this is that the E-commerce platform I offer will automatically send out confirming emails of the transactions and make it easy to send follow-up emails to remind everyone of the next payment due. As an added benefit, this customer is now part of your "contacts" so you will be able to send any other emails you might use (promotions, sales, quarterly or monthly newsletters, etc.).

The other way to use E-commerce is to either offer a "gift card" someone can give to anyone to redeem or use himself or herself. You can see why someone might purchase a gift card to give to someone else but why would they get one for themselves and pay upfront ahead of time? The answer is to provide something extra that only comes with the gift card. This "extra" can be a minor add-on service that compliments the main service and gives them a taste of other work or services you offer. The "extra" could be an extension of time. Maybe you offer an extra ten minutes free with the use of a gift card.

Over 100 million potential site visitors...

According to Facebook, 101 million US daily mobile users make up a whopping 78% of its 128 million daily users in the United States.

What you get from that statement above is that everyday over 100 million people in the US go online with a mobile device and get onto Facebook. Are they staying on Facebook? Many are but more importantly, how many will click links and go beyond Facebook and remain online?

So the question is, do you have a site that is mobile friendly and ready to receive, retain and interact with the vast number of potential site visitors?

Your web site should be responsive. That means it can detect that a smartphone browser is asking to display your web site files and thus provide the appropriate files for that smartphone's browser. Viewing a full size website on a tiny smartphone screen is very frustrating and difficult to navigate. Some of the pages of a full site should not be made available for viewing on a smart phone because they are problematic. Mobile device users are quick and on the move so you want to offer only the most important pages of the site.

Are any of your site visitors part of the 100 million US daily mobile users going online to Facebook?

Have future clients contact you first.

I come across web sites that do not take advantage of such an easy thing as lead generation by capturing emails, names and other information. Set up a basic form and wait to see who will contact you. Change up the form and test different offers and messages to see what works best.

Here are a few reasons why its a good idea to have a vehicle to capture names and email addresses on your website.

1. Even if your business is thriving you will need leads at some point in the future when business takes a dip. This is a cost effective way to gather leads and it costs nothing except a little time when reaching out to them with follow-ups.

2. If they gave you their contact info at least you know they are interested in something. Very few businesses rely on cold calls or cold contacts. Today you want to focus on who is reaching out to you. In fact if your marketing and lead capture is done correctly you have people contacting you who are interested in what you offer.

3. Nurture new relationships and expand the pool. As you expand your number of contacts and reach out with relevant information on a regular basis. You will convert a percentage of that pool over time.

Web site tweak and our new guarantee

Hello All, Hope every one has begun a wonderful new year!

I wanted to point out a couple changes on our web site. First we tweaked our logo so it makes it clear we are all about web design. Despite giving our clients a well rounded platter of print collateral and digital marketing we find that most of our business is web design.

By re-designing existing web sites we bring the brand and story to the fore-front, improve the aesthetics and site organization, increase site traffic and set up our clients with the tools to execute effective marketing with measurable results.

The other change on our web site is adding a guarantee offer to clients getting a new site or re-designed site. We've shortened the cycle time for web design projects and get the new clients thinking about a mobile site too. It is something they should consider getting even though their project will be completed on time. We can't emphasize enough how important it is to have a responsive mobile site.

It takes more than a lot of "hits"

Do you review your website stats? You should have access to data that shows various activity on your website. These statistics should be available in the backend of your site or accessed on the hosting server.

What I hear often is comments from a site owner or business owner about how many hits they are getting. The total number is nice but there are more important figures to concern yourself with. For example, it is really the amount of unique visitors that counts. Each unique visitor is an individual that came to your site. How many pages they clicked through will determine the number of hits.

With most systems you can see the average number of pages visited by each individual but here are the two most important figures to concern yourself with in my opinion.

First, you should be able to find out what pages were most visited. This information will tell you what pages are getting the most attention and you can determine if that is where you want your visitors to focus their attention.

Second, how much time did visitors spend looking at the pages on your site. See what the percentages are for the amount of time spent looking at your site. Hopefully your stats can show that. You might see that visitors are on your site for less than 30 seconds, 30 seconds to 2 minutes, 2 to 5 minutes, 5 to 15 minutes, 15 to 30 minutes or even more. If your site is what they are really looking for and you have quality content you can expect your visitors to spend 2 to 5 minutes reading and looking around. 2 to 5 minutes is an ideal amount of time for them to get interested and make a call-to-action right away (either contact you or make a purchase). If they spend too much time they may be comparing with other sites or stepped away, hopefully they bookmarked you. If site visitors spend very little time on your site you have some questions to think about. Is there enough content or is the site designed properly? By design I mean not just the aesthetics and layout but how information is organized and presented. Another big question is whether your SEO (search engine marketing) and on-site optimization are mis-leading? Are you driving the wrong visitors to your site?

Website statistics are also important to evaluate how effective your sales and marketing promotions are. You should be able to access a variety of other reports, such as: which search engines are generating the most traffic for your site, which keywords are resulting in the greatest number of hits and where most of your hits are coming from. Without usage data like this, you'll have a difficult time making informed decisions about the effectiveness of your website and marketing.

A smart tool to save time and may create more sales

Doctors, dentists, massage therapists, optometrists, spas, accountants, lawyers and service professionals such as electricians and plumbers all have something in common… they all rely on appointments! Appointments are an important part of their business and many of them use old-fashioned paper appointment books or calendar pads. The list of different businesses that rely on appointments is vast.

A better approach is for a business owner or office manager to be able to accept and set appointment requests online. It is easy reply to customers and takes advantage of future marketing opportunities.

Uson Consulting now offers a brand-new Calendar Manager. Owners, managers and employees can set up client appointments, custom events, and sales activity. Calendars can be viewed in monthly, weekly or daily formats based on preference. A widget allowing the user to select a preferred view can be added to any page on a Web site.

You can maintain private calendars for internal use only and manage employee profiles, set up tasks for individual workers and manage time off and vacation time. The Calendar Manager is an ideal solution for a prospect looking to manage time, employees and other resources efficiently in today’s challenging economic environment.

Fewer people are using voice telephone calls to manage their daily lives, because of the speed and convenience of the Internet and smartphones. Younger generations are expected to use voice telephone calls even less. A business could even use its Web site or mobile site to offer a coupon or discount if a customer makes an appointment within a certain time period. A customer or client would expect an email to confirm the appointment. In that email you could attach documents they need to read or fill out and bring with them or you can have a form built directly into the email. We can help you create different email templates that target the specific responses desired. The confirming email could provide information the client needs before an appointment or you could talk about a product/service related to the initial appointment request. This gets them thinking about other services/products you provide to create interest or get them to gather questions.

E-commerce can learn a thing or two from print catalogs

According to a recent report by comScore, desktop-based e-commerce sales were up 13 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2013. The study found that e-commerce sales have seen double-digit growth for 10 consecutive quarters.

As more E-commerce web sites pop up I believe that competition to grab those sales will become more difficult with time. E-commerce web sites remind me of printed catalogs we received in the mail, which was incredibly popular in the decades leading up to the turn of the century. In the past, I was an Art Director who specialized in print catalog design and layout. I worked for the largest catalog agency at the time, as well as in-house for some large catalog merchandisers. There were some very specific things that separated the larger successful catalogs from the smaller less successful catalogs. I believe the same things will separate E-commerce web sites into the two categories as well.

I am referring to great design and photography. The more successful catalogs and E-commerce web sites have well-designed layouts with quality photography to match. Too many E-commerce sites today unfortunately have no branding carried through the page design, poor layout design and the product photography looks like it was taken with a smartphone camera.

Photography is extremely important when creating an E-commerce website. Just like a printed catalog, a website is a non-tactile experience for the visitor since they do not have the ability to feel or sense a product with touch, smell, taste, etc. You must present products in an attractive manner with lighting, composition, styling, propping and more, all captured by a professional photographer.

It is even better if the photographer is collaborating with an Art Director or Designer so the images work with the aesthetics and brand that surround the products on the pages. Good design will extend into an easy shopping experience. The shopping cart should be simple with a layout and interface that are easy to use. The ability to cross-reference similar products or bundle items into groups for promotions and discounts will help keep a site visitor shopping on your website and increase the average spent. Good design will enhance and tell a story (brand image) for the business as well as the products.

These two attributes (design and photography by talented professionals) are crucial to making an E-commerce web site stand out and be impactful to encourage sales. Many web sites are missing the two elements that drive branding and help tell stories to the viewers. Unfortunately, there is a flood of cookie-cutter, template based, do-it-yourself, monotone, boring web sites created by individuals who are not qualified. All this is similar to the period of time when desktop publishing became widely available to the masses. Suddenly, Graphic Designers were getting less work and less pay while unqualified individuals handled design and production in-house for many businesses. That turned around as smart businesses started to see the degradation and in-effective print collateral being passed around. In time the same thing will happen with web sites and especially E-commerce sites. Be ahead of the curve and put creative talent to work so you can gain more from your online offerings.

An easier, faster process for our clients

Uson Consulting recently launched new tools to save time and make the work process more efficient.

One challenge has always been collecting content (images, videos, .docx files and more) from clients at the beginning of a new or redesign web site project. Content would be delivered to us with multiple emails, mailed or hand delivered media and pulled from servers.

We now provide clients our Content & Organization Tool. This online tool makes it easier to provide us all content clients wish to include in their projects.

It helps us reduce the overall time frame and deliver completed work faster.

If there is a large amount of files, we provide a password-protected cloud folder to upload batches quickly. There is also a separate spreadsheet for providing us with E-commerce product information and content.

Obtaining a new custom designed web site or updating an existing web site should be an easy, seemless process. Uson Consulting is always striving to improve systems and tools to increase client satisfaction.

Simple answer to getting more business…

Is your web site responsive? The answer should be yes. I'll post some interesting statistics to back this up below.

When a web site is responsive it can present itself in an appropriate version for the device it is viewed on. Most web sites are designed to be viewed on standard browsers for a laptop computer or desktop system. However, that web site can also be viewed with browsers on the tiny screens of smartphones and tablets. The issue is that the site is so small it becomes difficult to navigate and read. You can enlarge areas of the site to view but that requires scrolling around in all directions to view content. This is an annoying experience for the site visitor and that will encourage them to move on to another web site.

The solution is to create mobile-friendly versions of your web site that will display properly on smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. Being responsive means it will know what device you're using and display the site properly. Mobile sites are typically edited to provide only the most important pages and content with very easy-to-use navigation. Speed is very important to mobile device users so you want them to access what they need using a simplified version of the web site. Certain elements and graphics are too distracting and fill the screen or take away from displaying your content. You want to emphasize pages that work in conjuction with your social media efforts or are landing pages from marketing collateral.

Here are the numbers you cannot ignore...

54% of people who use their smartphones in the store are looking up other local stores’ pricing, while 53% are looking for online pricing. (Source: Wave Collapse, 2012)

44% of advanced device owners are looking for coupon opportunities on the devices and 17% have already purchased a product via mobile platforms (Source: GfK, 2012)

50% of smartphone shoppers use a GPS/mapping app to find a retail location; 44% access the site of a retailer where they typically shop; 34% downloaded a retailer’s app; and an equal number (24%) search for a coupon to use at checkout or use a barcode-scanning app to comparison shop (Source: Nielsen, 2012)

4 out of 5 consumers use smartphones to shop. (Source: comScore, 2012)

If your web site is responsive you have the opportunity to capture a very large growing group of consumers. If you would like to know more about what is available and how you can offer all those consumers a responsive web site please contact us.

SEO — on-page or off-page?

Do you know the difference between On-page and Off-page Optimization?

On-page optimization involves manipulating code and content on each page of a website to get better search results on search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. The elements that can be manipulated during on-page optimization include the actual HTML code, meta tags, keyword placement and keyword density.

By contrast, off-page optimization is not in the code on the pages of the website. Off-page optimization has an effect on a web page’s ranking on search engines with link popularity. Content is optimized in social media, blogs, articles and other websites which all point back to your site.

Off-site optimization is more costly (and more effective) because it is an on-going monthly campaign. Content is optimized and resides in many areas online other than your website. All of it should relate to your website, business or whatever you are trying to promote. The power of this optimization is that a much larger audience can access content that links back to you.

Customer abandoned shopping cart. Now what?

A recent study by Experian found that online shopping carts are abandoned at an alarmingly high rate of 56.2 percent! This means that the site visitor placed item in the shopping cart but left the site and did not complete the purchase. 56.2 percent is a lot of potential business to lose!

Two things that your online business should do is check when the customers abandoned their cart and follow up with a marketing email.

We design E-commerce websites that allow business owners to check and see when customers have abandoned their shopping cart. Some guesswork is involved and the information is not black and white but here are a couple of scenarios. If the customer places one item in the cart and abandons after a few minutes they may be searching other websites to compare. You know your product best so you have to make the call. Maybe you're not competitive with your pricing? Look at your competitors and see what is being offered. The price may not be the only thing the customer is comparing. Are they looking at the warranty information or service provided along with the product?

The other thing you want to see is if the customer leaves the cart after adding additional product. Are they adding accessories or items that work in conjunction with another item in the cart? If they are abandoning the cart in that case it could be that the add-ons are inflating the price too much. Or, they did not realize the expense involved because they need more than they originally thought. You can look into educating the customer before they place anything in the cart with descriptive text that explains the need and benefit for the extra items. We like to have an automatic message come up that says, "Customers who purchased this also purchased or looked at...". We also encourage bundling items together and offering them at a slight discount. If the customer is logged-in you have their email address. It is a good idea to follow up with an email and ask if they had any questions about the product they were looking at. You can make this a generic email that is sent to anyone who abandons the cart and make sure you mention that you have experience with the product or an expert who can help them. You could customize the email to point out any special offers you have or how they can save money with a bundle that they did not see when they were on your site.

There is a lot of room for closing deals when a cart is abandoned. We provide you tools but ultimately you, the site owner, knows what may entice a customer to return and consider making a purchase.

As a business owner what frustrations do you encounter with Web Developers?

I wrote the question above in the previous posting with the hope that some business owners would share an issue or two so I could learn about what goes on out there and see if there's anything that repeats in general. I also posted the same question in various medical, physician, dental, imaging and marketing groups since I have a few clients in those areas. I got a reply from someone in the medical profession who suggested that I offer some examples or case studies rather than just link and direct the reader to the same question on my blog.

I understand the line of thinking this person is coming from because the number one rule in social media and blogging is to give out information. I believe my intent was reversed and I was hoping people would share insights and experiences with me instead. That did not happen and I admit I overlooked the number one rule in blogging as I mentioned.

So here are a few things my clients shared with me that frustrated them before coming to me. I offered them effective solutions.

1) Easy access to update and maintain content on the website.
Even though they may never touch the website, the site owner wants to know that they can roll up their sleeves and get into the pages. Some clients go into the content on a regular basis and may have an employee dedicated for that task as well. We create custom websites built on a platform that makes it very easy to manage and edit content. Many clients have had sites in the past that required knowledge of coding and traditional "web" languages in order to do anything with the website. Often that meant they needed to rely on a web developer, web master or have someone on staff with those skills. All of those options are costly whether you're looking at the hourly rates that add up or overhead costs of an employee or expenses in dealing with an agency. Effective websites that engage visitors and keep them coming back have fresh content updated on a regular basis. We make it easy and cost effective to self manage.

2) Unlimited toll-free Customer Support.
Clients can access and update content when they are on my platform but what if they need a little help? Sometimes a client wants to edit or tweak elements in the site that are more than just content edits. Many times I hear complaints when a site owner wants to make minor changes but has to spend quite a bit again for outside resources or staff-up and generate a lot of overhead. We solve that by offering Customer Support Experts, toll-free and unlimited for a low monthly flat fee. You simply call and ask to speak with an expert in either site editing, content management, email campaigns, SEO, social media or e-commerce. For a low fee you have experts at your disposal for as long as you need to show you how to modify and update your web site.

3) Everything you need for an effective online presence is included with your website.
Many of our clients came from situations that were difficult and expensive because every time they wanted to do something new, expand the website or market and promote their business they had to purchase additional services or buy add-on features. Our custom designed websites include everything you need built-in. No additional cost for e-commerce, creating and launching email campaigns, managing forms/collecting data and launching a mobile site. These are all features that typically are offered a-la-carte with other developers, agencies, etc. We have it all included with your website and ready to implement.

What frustrations do you encounter with Web Developers, Online Marketing and Management?

We have worked with several medical, dental, imaging practices, a surgical center, medical consultants and medical marketing individuals. Our clients are happy with the websites, online marketing, SEO and various creative collateral we created for them.

We know from past conversations that the investment and cost of maintaining an online presence is an issue when working with some web development companies. The other issue we hear is the difficulty or inability to maintain, monitor and adjust your website or marketing in an easy, cost-effective manner.

We would love to know what challenges or frustrations you may have come across (without pointing fingers) so we can improve and continue to offer effective Web Design and Creative Marketing.

Any feedback or examples are appreciated and we hope that your comments will ultimately help you or your colleagues. Feel free to contact us! We look forward to hearing from you.

Does your site have ineffective and useless keywords?

A client asked me recently if I could add some keywords to her website to drive traffic from searches. The assumption from her request was that I would add them without incurring additional charges to a site that was already very affordable. The site is fairly small, just a few pages and completed in record time before an event that was taking place.

This reminded me of a comic book I had when I was a kid from Archie Comics. You may recall, it was a group of teenagers named Archie, Betty, Jughead, Veronica, etc. There was a scene in which Archie walks into a CB and Ham Radio store and asks the sales person behind the counter, "what can I get for five dollars?" The sales person replies, "a fake antenna to put on your car so you can have the CB-look".

Just adding some keywords to a site will give you the SEO-look but it is useless and will not drive traffic to your site. I come across many sites that appear to have the SEO-look with words that the business owner or employee put into the header that seem to relate to the business but are not what people may search for. On the flip side these words may actually be exactly what everyone is putting into the searches but that can result in pulling many competitive sites as well so your site appears far down the list, many pages from the start of the results.

So what I recommend to clients (really a must) and often include as part of the new site or re-design is an "On-Site Optimization Package". This is the most affordable and smallest step to take in SEO (search engine optimization). Here is an overview of the work we do with this package.

Keyword Research:
- Review content on pages to create keyword phrases
- Run Analytics on specific pages/keyword phrases
- Edit/Modify Keywords/Keyword Phrases

Optimize Page Content:
- Edit content to reflect keywords/keyword phrases
- Integrate into titles, headings, description, alt tags
- Rename image files and re-link
- Check for broken links
- Add content next to images and/or videos for relevancy

Meta Tags:
- Embed Meta Tags based on the new keyword phrases into the code

Site Maps:
- Create and place link to an html site map on index page
- Create a XML site map and upload to Google, Bing and Yahoo

This is a very basic package and yet our clients get good results a short time after the work is completed. In general SEO is far more complex and requires an on-going monthly commitment in terms of work and investment. The package above is a good start and certainly far better than just throwing some keywords into the site.
